Description

This is the fourth print I’ve created featuring herons. They’re a bird I’ve been fascinated with since I was a child. I can still remember drawing one from a picture in a book long before I’d seen one in real life. I regularly see grey herons here in Norfolk.

The first layer of this reduction print revealed a tantalising glimpse of the outline of a heron.  The reduction method (my favourite technique) uses a single piece of lino to produce a multi-coloured print. The lino is gradually cut away as each layer is printed and the image emerges. Sometimes, only a very small printable area remains for the final, darkest layer. As the block is essentially destroyed during the process, a reduction linocut can never be reprinted. The final version is made up from five separate layers with the beaks painted in using watercolours.

Print size 152 x  203mm, from a limited edition of 18. Hand printed on Somerset Satin 250g paper using a small relief press. Due to the nature of the printmaking process minor variations can occur between prints, making each one a truly unique piece of artwork. Each print is numbered, titled and signed at the bottom and mounted in a neutral colour to fit a standard 10 x 12″ frame.  The artwork will be  shipped flat protected by strong cardboard packaging and sent by tracked mail.
