Description

The bark of silver birch trees is so attractive, but there’s little opportunity in England to see them growing as a forest as they do in Finland. This original reduction linocut is from a limited edition of 17. I used metallic silver ink to print the bark on some prints, so please look closely at the associated photographs. The metallic silver changes dependent upon how the light catches it. Print size 305 x 203mm. Hand printed on Somerset Satin 250g paper using a small relief press.

The reduction method (my favourite technique) uses a single piece of lino to produce a multi-coloured print. The lino is gradually cut away as each layer is printed and the image emerges. Sometimes, only a very small printable area remains for the final, darkest tone. As the block is essentially destroyed during the process, a reduction print can never be reprinted. Due to the nature of the printmaking process minor variations can occur between prints, making each one a truly unique piece of artwork.  Each print is numbered, titled and signed at the bottom. The artwork will be shipped flat protected by strong cardboard packaging and sent by tracked mail.
