Description
I first created a print based on this oak tree back in 2021. My attention was drawn to it by a buzzard that flew out of the branches as I cycled past during lockdown. Fast forward to late 2025 and as I cycled past the same tree it felt like meeting an old friend again that had aged a bit in the intervening years. It had lost some branches, but I’d spent so long carving them that they still felt very familiar to me.
Although I created the original print (see the last gallery image) using the reduction technique, I’d kept the final piece of lino with just the silhouette of the tree. I decided to trim the branches to reflect the ravages of time and here is the resulting new print. Fingers crossed the tree’s still standing in another five years and I can use the same piece of lino.
I used the reduction method to create the background, printing different coloured layers from one piece of lino until there was very little of it left and then I inked up the tree and printed that to created a variable edition of 12, one of which features the original bird from 2021. Please look closely at the associated photographs. Print size 152 x 203mm. Hand printed on Somerset Satin 250g paper using a small relief press.
Due to the nature of the printmaking process minor variations can occur between prints, making each one a truly unique piece of artwork. Each print is numbered, titled and signed at the bottom. The artwork will beĀ shipped flat (unframed) protected by strong cardboard packaging and sent by tracked mail.
